Outside of my cube I decided to put the inspirational message: "There's
no I in Ads UI".
Later that day,
two different people came by to tell me that
there is, indeed, an "I" in the word "AdsUI". When I explained that it
came from the motivational saying "There's no I in team" and that's what
made it funny, one of those two people laughed. The second of those two
people said: "Yes but there is an I. It's at the end of the
word.
A few days later, someone altered my sign overnight:
This is totally false. There is lots of love in Ads UI. We're a very
loving team. So I removed the post-it note.
This morning, there was a brand new alteration to the sign
posted:
Okay, that is true. There is no pie in Ads UI. This clearly must be
remedied.
(Above picture taken at Bush & Presidio in SF.)
It's hard to believe that his presidency is finally coming to an end. A
Bush has been in office for about
half of my life.
I think that nothing better sums up this man's presidency than two
things:
- The
Onion Headlines from his inauguration until today. It starts with
the gem "Bush Reaches Out To Hispanic Community With Generous
Tip." and just gets better from there.
- The various impressions of Will Farrell as Bush over the years.
Don't miss this
one.
Today I baked some Obama cookies to celebrate the inauguration tomorrow.
If you work at Google and arrive before the mad-rush to grab them, pop
by my desk tomorrow. The rest of you will just have to imagine the
sweet taste of hope (hint: it tastes like icing):
If you get some time today, I seriously recommend that you watch the
below video. It's a whopping 37 minutes long, but it is really and
genuinely worth watching. By the 4th minute I knew that I was going to
sit through the full 37. I don't think I've ever seen someone speak so
eloquently on anything, ever.
Just listen to the audio while you're making dinner or doing the dishes
tonight. And think for a few seconds that this person's about to become
president.
Revel in the beauty of a long-needed good decision by the people down
here, grab a cookie, and enjoy.

- When I was in Grade 3, my class put on a play with a prince,
princess, dragon, evil wizard, etc. And I begged and pleaded to be
allowed to play the prince. I didn't understand why my teacher thought
that that would be "weird". After enough begging, she let me have the
role.
- I used to wear glasses -- bifocals, actually. Both problems
healed when I was a kid and now my eyes are totally fine, like
magic.
- I have a secret aptitude for puppets. When I was 7, I put on a
puppet show for my brother's kindergarden class. Even today, if I walk
by a store with awesome puppets, I usually stop by to try some of them
out and to keep my skills sharp, but I almost never show this to anyone
else.
- I can pick out individual instruments in a piece of music, which
sounds easier than it is.
- I dislike tomatoes. When I was really young, this made life
difficult -- everything from pasta to pizza sauce was off the menu.
Today I can happily eat almost everything with tomatoes in it -- except
for just a whole tomato plain on its own, which still makes me gag a
little.
- I can recite several plays from beginning to end, every
word.
- I don't know my left from right. I know about a million tricks to
figure it out -- my usual one is just to make little "L"s with my thumb
and index finger and see which is the real "L" and which the backwards
"L", but I can't tell you which way is left or right unless I figure it
out every single time.
